Challenge

Disjointed systems and legacy ETL slows access to critical financial insights
Manual processes and proprietary tooling create productivity bottlenecks

To better deliver financial insights critical for operations and research, The Amgen FIT team went from excel based reporting to data flows using multiple data systems and Alteryx. While access to data improved, having data spread and processed by multiple tools meant manual effort for security and governance and difficulty adding new data and delivering new insights. In addition, the specialized skills needed made finding and onboarding resource difficult. The result was slowed availability of data and not keeping up with evolving business needs.

Locked-in ETL with Alteryx limited data processing and team expansion

To speed access to data, the team leverage Alteryx for data preparation for quick fixes but it grew to manage core data. This constrained overall capacity with limited ability to scale up for peak processing. And with no granular governance, it was difficult to operate enterprise wide. With locked-in, proprietary workflows, it was hard to find and scale up new team members. The result was additional effort to deliver data, compromising the team’s ability to make quick, data-driven decisions.

Solution

Modernization with Prophecy and Databricks drives faster, more efficient decision-making
High-performance analytics for timely insights

The Amgen team moved to Databricks to consolidate data systems to leverage data cloud platform elasticity and scaling. With centralized governance, the team was able to streamline data security and compliance. And with open standard coding, the could leverage modern data tools and environments.

Visual, AI driven workflows enable Alteryx migration

To move the Alteryx workflows to Databricks, the team initially relied on manual coding. However this was taking too long and causing the team to miss their transition deadline. The team selected Prophecy to speed pipeline development for rapid development with visual and AI. This allowed them to involve more team members and fast track on boarding developers. The result was a 5x increase in pipeline development times that enabled the team to complete the migration, realize software retirement cost saving, and deliver better data and insights to help improve treatment development.

“With Prophecy and Databricks we were able to fully leverage data cloud platform processing speeds, speed pipeline development, and improve collaboration. Prophecy allowed us to rapidly ramp up resources and modernize our platform and speed access to critical financial data”
